KEYWORDS LECTURE: IDENTITY, QUEER, AND LATINO/A
This lecture is an introduction adapted from Philip Nel and Lissa Paul's text Keywords for Children's Literature, which aims to address core thematic and genre concepts involved with Saenz's novel. The idea here is to explain about the social and historical contexts surrounding Queer and Latino/a personal and political identities as well as some fundamental concepts of identity. By contextualizing the Queer and Latino/a identity groups within an analysis of identity construction, students who do not come from Queer or Latino/a perspectives can still relate to the content material. Certainly, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is about young people trying to find where they belong as they mature and become aware of their own processes of identity construction. The aim of this lecture is to bring students together in order to see connections between these "keywords" (or people in a sense), which are most likely not initially obvious.
